Accessibility
Built to be usable by everyone.
Our research should be readable, and our tools usable, regardless of ability or the technology someone uses to reach them.
The standard we aim for
We target WCAG 2.1 Level AA across the site. Concretely, on every page we build:
- Every text/background color pairing is checked for contrast before it ships, not eyeballed.
- Headings follow a logical order, with no levels skipped.
- A "skip to content" link is the first stop for keyboard users on every page.
- Focus states are visible everywhere — links, buttons, and nav items all show a clear outline on keyboard focus.
- Navigation and decorative graphics carry proper labels (
aria-label,aria-hidden) so screen readers get what matters and skip what doesn't.
Where we’re still working on it
This site is built and maintained by one person. The interactive Policy Labs — Mobility Mayor's policy sandbox, DC Courier's street-design game — are more complex than a standard page and haven't been through the same formal accessibility review yet. Embedded third-party content, like the Substack newsletter signup, follows Substack's own accessibility practices rather than ours.
If something on this site doesn't work with the technology you use, we want to know about it, even if we can't promise a fix on any particular timeline.
