Why IMI exists
The public conversation about autonomous vehicles and artificial intelligence has settled into two camps that mostly talk past each other. As with many emerging technologies, one side of the debate treats technology as inevitable and beneficial by default, while the other treats technology as something happening to communities rather than an opportunity to shape the future.
Making matters worse, rising political tensions make it extremely difficult for policymakers to make wise decisions on behalf of their current constituents and the generations to come. As a parent, I often think about the generational challenges that I hope our society will overcome before my children become adults: housing shortages, traffic violence, rising costs of higher education, and our calcified institutions.
We won't overcome these with the vitriol that's become far too common in today's politics of fear and interest-group protectionism. Generational progress requires the courage to adopt sober, smarter, forward-looking policies with the recognition that advancing society means making tradeoffs – and that smart tradeoffs we make today will leave the world a better place for our children tomorrow.
I started the Institute to do that work in public, in plain language, at the speed the debate actually moves. Most people want safer streets, transportation that works, and livable cities for their families to thrive. That majority deserves better than a choice between marketing and alarm.

How we’re structured
The Innovation Majority Institute is a 501(c)(3) organization based in Washington, D.C. It is the research affiliate of The Innovation Majority, a 501(c)(4) advocacy organization. The two are separately governed and separately funded.
The Institute publishes research and educational material, and does not run campaigns. Our findings are public and available for anyone to use.
Board of Directors
Matthew Lipka
President and ChairMatthew Lipka is a Partner at Catalyst·Wayfare and a Senior Advisor on the Democratic Cost of Living Agenda at Chamber of Progress, where he advises emerging technology companies in highly-regulated spaces on policy strategies. Previously, he was Head of Policy at Nuro, a company building autonomous, electric delivery vehicles, where he oversaw federal, state, and local public policy, government relations, and public affairs, as well as the company's sustainability program.
Bridget Versteegden (née Bartol)
SecretaryBridget Versteegden is the Executive Director of Grid Sector Industry and Regulatory Affairs at the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA). Prior to NEMA, Bridget served as Deputy Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor to the Secretary at the U.S. Department of Energy. She has over 15 years of experience as a trusted policy advisor, consensus builder, senior manager, strategist, and crisis communications expert.
Todd O'Boyle
TreasurerTodd O'Boyle is Executive Director of U.S. AI and Data Policy for JPMorgan Chase, where he leads the firm's cross-functional federal and state AI policy development, strategic engagement, and policy campaign execution. Prior to JPMorgan Chase, Todd served as Vice President of Technology Policy at the Chamber of Progress, Senior Manager of Public Policy at Twitter, and Director of Government Relations and Transportation/Data Partnerships at Lime.
Mollie Cohen D'Agostino
DirectorMollie Cohen D'Agostino is founding Executive Director of the Mobility Science, Automation, and Inclusion Center (MoSAIC) at the UC Davis Institute of Transportation Studies, established in 2023. MoSAIC is a partnership with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, designed to expand UC Davis' technical and policy expertise on connected and automated vehicles, artificial intelligence, robotics, and related public policy strategies.
